WATER WISE: A BUSINESS DEDICATED TO WATER CONSERVATION

Saturday, May 16 @ 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. – The Leaning Pear – 111 River Rd.

Host: Salwa Khan, Mothering Earth program/podcast – salwakhan@vcyes.com

Speakers: Sarah Simpson, Architect, Colorspace Architecture + Urban Design

and Rachel & Matt Buchanan, The Leaning Pear owners

Group size: 40 registrants

On this event:

meet an architect and local restaurant owners who are water wise and have designed and installed multiple water conservation features at the restaurant which is the Leaning Pear in the center of Wimberley. In parking areas, permeable pavers allow rainwater to soak in, rather than running off and adding to flooding. The restaurant has a rainwater collection system which is used for irrigation and flushing of water closets and urinals in a new bar building, as well as low-flow water-saving fixtures. In addition, the landscaping around the restaurant features native, low-water, drought-tolerant plants.

You will see the new features and hear about how they will save water and money, while providing a beautiful functional space for restaurant patrons

Sponsored by: City of Wimberley, The City of Woodcreek, Master Naturalist Hays County Chapter and Wimberley Village Library

water wise: minimize floods and erosion with smart land management

Saturday, May 30 @ 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: Private home

Host: Salwa Khan, Mothering Earth program/podcast – salwakhan@vcyes.com

Speaker: Christine Middleton, Hays County Master Naturalist

Group size: 25

Native vegetation is vital to flood mitigation, especially on steep hillsides and in riparian areas. That same vegetation retains valuable moisture in times of drought. Mowed lawn areas that slope to a waterway become alleyways in heavy rains, with rushing water increasing flood intensity.

In this session, Christine Middleton, a Master Naturalist whose HELM (Habitat Enhancing Land Management) team consults with landowners explains how maintaining a vegetated riparian buffer allows water to soak in, protects the banks, and contributes to the overall health of our waterways.

The session will be held at a waterfront private home where the homeowners are maintaining healthy native vegetation along the riverbank. (Address will be provided to registrants).

Register online or email Nomi.
